Moldova Gymnasium Renovation

Successfully completed renovation at Moldova's Rezina Penitentiary 17. We are now measuring the health, mental health, and wellbeing outcomes of prisoners using the transformed gymnasium facility.

Project In Progress

Restoring Dignity Through Community

The Raphael Rowe Foundation is working closely with the Moldovan Prison authorities at Rezina Penitentiary 17 to identify the crucial need for a functional fitness space. We have purchased the construction materials, and the prisoners and staff are supporting the renovations.

This collaborative approach goes beyond renovation—it's about restoring human dignity and building community through meaningful engagement. By involving prisoners in the renovation process, we foster ownership, develop valuable skills, and create an environment focused on rehabilitation rather than punishment, in alignment with UN Nelson Mandela Rules.

The project addresses critical issues of idleness, lack of purpose, and mental health challenges prevalent in prison environments. By creating opportunities for physical activity and collaborative work, we're building trust between staff and inmates while promoting the values of respect, cooperation, and self-discipline essential for successful reintegration.

Project Scope

International Standards

The project aligns with the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners—commonly referred to as the Nelson Mandela Rules—which advocate for prisoners to spend significant time outdoors and engage in physical activities whenever possible.

Such activities are essential for maintaining both physical and mental well-being, reducing aggression, and facilitating social reintegration. By promoting physical activity within prisons, we not only enhance health outcomes but also instill values such as respect, cooperation, and self-discipline.

Our fundraising efforts aim to improve prison conditions by providing necessary equipment to establish a program focused on rehabilitation and mental health. An upgraded and well-equipped activity program will replace the outdated or non-existent facilities currently in use.
